Fr Nathaniel Brazil of the Catholic parish of Whanganui – Te Pārihi Katorika Ki Whanganui, blessed the new bell tower and bell beside the church, during Sunday morning Mass on 1 September. The blessing was televised onto the projector inside the church for the congregation to see. The newly-restored bell rung constantly during the Gloria.
Six months previously the bell tower was pulled down due to rotten posts. The 150-year-old J Murphy bell, cast in Dublin, was cleaned, polished and lacquered, while a new tower was constructed and positioned outside the sacristy door. The bell-tower work has been part of the maintenance upgrade work being undertaken on St Mary’s Church.
