Pope Francis, Feb 2025

These 40 days are a time when we go into the desert, to rediscover or renew or reinvigorate our trust in God’s providence for us.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!The following reflection appeared in the Cathedral Parish newsletter for this weekend:St Patrick’s Day is more than just a celebration of Irish heritage—it’s a reminder of the power of faith, mission, and God’s transforming grace. St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was not Irish by birth. Captured as a young man and taken to Ireland as a slave, he later escaped, only to return years later as a missionary, bringing the Gospel to the very people who had once enslaved him. His life is a testament to forgiveness, courage, and unwavering trust in God’s call. In New Zealand, where many trace their roots back to Ireland, St Patrick’s Day has long been a special occasion. But even for those without Irish ancestry, Patrick’s story speaks to us all. Like him, we are called to be missionaries in our own way—not necessarily by traveling to distant lands, but by sharing Christ’s love in our homes, workplaces, and communities. As Jesus commands in Matthew 28:19, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.”Patrick’s deep faith and reliance on prayer sustained him through hardship. His famous Breastplate Prayer includes the powerful words: “Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me.” This is a beautiful reminder that Christ surrounds us in every moment of our lives. As we mark St Patrick’s Day, may we celebrate with joy, but also take inspiration from his faith and courage. Let us ask for his intercession, that we too may be bold in sharing God’s love and steadfast in our trust in Him.St Patrick, pray for us. ... See MoreSee Less
