Celebrating Catholic Schools Day 2025

Published on 26th May, 2025

The Diocese of Palmerston North joins Catholic communities across Aotearoa New Zealand in celebrating Catholic Schools Day on Wednesday, 28 May 2025.

This year’s theme, Shine like stars in the world – E tīaho ana koe hei rama i te ao, invites us to reflect on the unique contribution of Catholic education in nurturing faith, character, and service.

Catholic schools have been a valued part of New Zealand communities for generations, offering an education that combines strong academic learning with spiritual and moral development. They help young people grow in their faith, discover their strengths, and live out values such as compassion, justice, and hope.

In his message for Catholic Schools Day, Bishop John Adams expressed deep pride in the Catholic schools within the Diocese of Palmerston North.

“It’s always a joy to talk about something you love,” he said. “And I truly love and care for our Catholic schools. I’m incredibly proud of the work being done across our diocese to nurture young minds and hearts.”

Drawing on his experience as a former teacher in both state and Catholic schools, Bishop John reflected on what makes Catholic education unique.

“What sets Catholic schools apart is the privilege we have to explore one of the most profound aspects of human life – the spiritual life. We can talk openly about meaning, purpose, and the truth that life is directed toward something beyond this world. That’s a beautiful and essential part of the education we offer.”

He also offered heartfelt thanks to all who support Catholic education:

“To our parents – thank you for entrusting your children to the care of the Church through our Catholic schools. And to all those who work in and lead our schools – your dedication is a gift. You’re doing important, beautiful work.”

Dr Kevin Shore, Chief Executive of the New Zealand Catholic Education Office (NZCEO), acknowledged the vital role of teachers, staff, and families in supporting Catholic schools. He also highlighted the 50th anniversary of the Private Schools Conditional Integration Act – legislation that has been instrumental in shaping the landscape of Catholic education in New Zealand.

“As a result (of the Act), our Catholic schools have been able to build on, and strengthen, a school system that benefitted from the wonderful contributions of so many religious and lay people in communities across the country over the previous 180 years.”

The Diocese of Palmerston North is home to 36 Catholic schools – 28 primary and 8 secondary schools – spread across the region, including Hawke’s Bay, Palmerston North, Feilding, Tararua, Taihape, Whanganui and Taranaki. Each school will celebrate Catholic Schools Day in its own unique way.

We invite all members of our communities – students, families, alumni, parishioners, and friends – to join us in celebrating the rich heritage and ongoing mission of Catholic education.
