Over the week of December 11 – 15 2017 I had the privilege of attending the Young Catholic Leaders Camp (YCL), at Highland Home Christian Camp in the Pohangina Valley.

My five day experience at YCL camp was so amazing. I made lifelong friends and learnt many leadership skills, in particular that being a team leader doesn’t always mean that you have to lead from the front – you can also lead from behind. This is important because at my college we focus on being servant leaders to our community.

During the camp I enjoyed participating in activities with my small group, getting to know the other participants and learning about different leadership qualities that are needed to become the best leaders we can be for our schools.

At the beginning of YCL I was hesitant to open myself up and express my faith to the others who I didn’t know very well. But as the week went by I grew more confident, and with the help of the mentors, I came to trust and help my fellow student leaders as we learnt about leadership.

I highly recommend that year 12 students of 2018 should apply for this life-changing camp. Not only will they learn new skills and develop old skills for leadership (with sessions that cover leadership qualities and Catholic values), but they will also form close bonds with those from other colleges – and most importantly, grow closer to God spiritually, mentally and physically.

Jaqueline is a year 13 student at St Peter’s College, Palmerston North
