Our Oceania Bishops planning meeting isn’t all about meetings. We also get out and experience something of the place we are in.
A couple of months ago I suggested that we visit De La Salle College in South Auckland. It’s a predominantly pasifica College with a fine reputation. I had met some staff from the College at an Education Conference in Wellington a couple of years ago and their engaging manner left a great impression on me. A community of De La Salle Brothers (www.delasalle.org.nz) live on site and while the College couldn’t claim to have the best facilities in Auckland its vibrant spirit trumps any show of bricks and mortar.
The boys singing, responses and general participation in the Mass was an uplifting experience for we Bishops. The impression that has remained with me about De La Salle is that first and foremost it is a community of faith. Parents, relatives, and friends of the Brothers were present together with the staff and boys to host us.
